The souvenir, as a concept, is rich in many interpretations; an object that transforms from its original function into one that carries memory and meaning; an exotic other that is integrated into the everyday. Souvenirs from Home is an exhibition aiming to explore the intimate and transformative powers of souvenirs, from a cheap plastic material, or shell on the beach to a holder of memory and meaning. Souvenirs are often a means of ensuring the survival of a craft practice, and yet in order for a traditional object to become a souvenir it becomes warped and changed. Drawing on ideas from Susan Stewart’s On Longing, and referencing thoughts from Lee Mingwei’s Stone Journey. Souvenirs from home is an exhibition of small objects and jewellery drawing on motifs, techniques and materials gathered through the three homes Sylvia Burgess has experienced in the past two years.
