Lühikirjeldus: This project examines why young Singaporeans aged 18–35 with passive familiarity in Chinese dialects rarely use them in everyday interaction, despite positive attitudes. It reframes dialect decline as an activation problem, not a preservation one. Grounded in behavioural theory, Systems-Oriented Design, and Research through Design, it identifies the barrier as an absence of conditions that make participation feel possible. A probe found that dialect use can emerge when permission, collectivity, and approximation are present among peers. The design response is a two-layer system embedded in existing messaging platforms: a structured layer for peer responses to shared situation prompts, and an ambient layer where dialect expressions circulate as shareable artefacts. The intended effect is not fluency, but gradual normalisation. Small, approximate acts of participation become socially acceptable, intervening in social context rather than content.
